Question Mark

My students in my reading class are truly very eager...intelligent...and curious students...
There we were in the class one evening when suddenly one of them asked...
*how do i ask this turkish question in English?*
"Barrack Obama... kaç inci Amerikanın Cumhurbaşkanı?"
kaç inci means *ke berapa* in malay
Cumhurbaşkanı means *presiden* in Malay
I felt as if i was struck by a lightning...!! I couldnt come up with an answer.
I searched every particle...every compartment in my brain to seek the asnwer but my brain was as if had a meltdown...it couldnt come up with an answer...The truth is..i never knew there is such a structure of question in English! But perhaps i was wrong??
And so...during breaktime... i consulted 2 of my colleagues...
and YES!
I was not alone!! It was and probably is the most famous question circulating around as well... n they were stuck as well (Thank God!!)..
That is a question of the Turkish language structure where in English..u simply ask...
*What number is Barrack Obama??*
Phew! what a relief!!!
Thank You for hopping by. Hope to see you again soon... :0)

*LOL* This happens when you try to do direct translation. I'm sure I will face similar problems with my girl when she starts asking certain phrases in malay. *grins*

ps: miss u loads too babe!

Hehe... Those students keeping you away from blogging, eh? :)

Translation is no easy matter. In your case, you're thinking in 3 languages!!! 'what number is Barrack Obama?' seems a bit ambiguous. Would 'How many presidents has America had before Barrack Obama?'appeal to you? *scratching my head hard now*

"Barrack Obama... kaç inci Amerikanın Cumhurbaşkanı?"

kaç inci'nin Turkcede asil anlami incilerin sayisidir "number of pearls" ama kac ve inci'nin arasindaki boslugu sildiginiz zaman kacinci olur buda

"kaçıncı
(in an ordinal series) Which ...?: Kaçıncı sınıftasın? What grade are you in?"
anlamini alir.

'How many presidents has America had before Barrack Obama?
cumlesini kullanmaniz daha anlamli olur.
Farkli dillerde cevirim her zaman kelime kelime ayni olamaz onun yerine cevirilen dile en yakin anlami olan ifadeler kullanilir.

Hahaha, it's obviously easier to ask that question in Malay or Turkish, but the sentence structure of the English language does make it an awkward form of question.

My guess would be "WHAT NUMBER (OF) THE US PRESIDENT IS BARRACK OBAMA?"

Barrack Obama / is / the nth / US president.

Just my guess, although I am also guessing whether it's also correct to use WHICH instead of what.

Confusing eh?

Simah, this entry of yours has been bugging me for hours!! The more I think of it, the more I feel WHICH may be right, if WHICH refers to (the 44th (or whatever order) US President).

WHICH US president is Barack Obama?

Does that sound right?

Eh, Barack is with one r kan?
